Flirt is the tone I’m least qualified to write. I grew up understanding that this part of life was private, and overt sexuality was frowned upon. Telling someone you want them, in plain words, in the middle of an ordinary day, is new to me. Writing these messages made me blush. Some of them still do.
That’s not because I think there’s anything wrong with them. It’s the opposite. I think being wanted, and hearing it, is one of the best parts of being with someone. I just never learned the language for it, so I built a tone that has it ready.
It sounds like this:
“Been thinking about you in ways that are not entirely appropriate.”
“I’ve been thinking about tonight since this morning.”
Like Romantic, this is a skill you can build, not something you either have or don’t. The risk is that it lands as try-hard instead of playful. So shuffle through the messages until you find one that sounds like something you would actually say. Skip the ones that make you cringe. Send the one that only makes you blush a little.
Then see how it lands. If it goes over well, keep going. The habit builds, and the lines start to feel more like yours. If it doesn’t, no harm done. Try a different tone.
One caution, and it’s mostly for the men. If the two of you don’t already have a strong physical relationship, do not start with this tone, however comfortable you are with the words. A suggestive text when that part of things is distant might not read as flirting. It can feel like pressure. Start with Romantic or Understated and come back to this one later.
I built this one for the couples who never stopped flirting, and for the people like me who are still learning how.
Part 4 of 6 in the tones series. Missed the last one? Read Romantic. Next up: Comedian.
